Ensure a proper fit for your dog pack

Take your dog's girth measurement

Before ordering, take note of your dog's girth size by measuring the widest part of your dog's ribcage. Since dogs come in various sizes and body shapes, make sure to take any other unique traits (large shoulders, long torso, etc.) into consideration. If your dog is between sizes, it is recommended to size up.

Putting on your dog's hiking pack

Slip the pack over your dog's head. Put your dog's right leg through the right front loop, then thread the center strap under your dog's belly and secure with the buckle.

Getting a secure fit

Adjust all straps to fit your dog's body. The straps should fit snugly, but not so snug that you can't put two fingers underneath the straps comfortably. Before venturing out, it's important to make sure the weight is evenly distributed on both sides of the pack to keep it from sliding to one side.

Safety hazard, but otherwise okay, should be improved.
For 30-ish dollars, I would have expected more.I will start off by offering my biggest issue: The D ring is NOT WELDED. We are not told it's not welded, and you can barely spin it around to check (which as a dog collar/harness maker, I ALWAYS suggest you check), and are told to hook a leash to it by the company. My dog isn't big on pulling, but managed to bend it about 1/4th of an inch apart- in about 30 seconds of pulling. You have a dog who genuinely pulls or lunges then this d-ring is going to pry apart instantly. This is a major flaw and a safety hazard. The straps are hard to use- they could have just used a typical triglide, but instead made an obnoxious to use Velcro bit that irritates my dogs skin. The handle is nice- it's firm, easy to grab, padded, good over-all design. This is important, because you'll be grabbing it a lot to re-adjust the backpack, unless you use perfectly balanced items- like cans of soup. But add a poop bag to one side, and it will be touching the ground in no-time, flopped over. If you tighten the straps enough to keep them from slipping, it will cause your dog a lot of pain due to the rubbing after awhile, which can be bad enough to warrant a vet visit if you aren't careful. The stitching started coming undone the first use.I bought this February of 2019. Medium. It fits both my shepherd and my mix.The second strap is very useful- but if you have a male, be careful. It takes the perfect amount of adjusting to keep it from rubbing their armpits, or their personal bits. For simple exercising, its good. I wouldn't use it for a day hike, more of an hour or two for a jaunt through the neighborhood or a well-cleared trail where there won't be any branches or brush. The cute little 'side' pockets are pretty useless. If you want to put your keys in there it'd work, or a wallet, but if you do it sets the whole bag off balance, and if you have it tight enough not to set it off balance, it messes with your dogs skin.I will say though that the larger pockets are very good in design. They expand, or contract. Zipping the bottom close helps it stay close to your pups side, and limits jostling. If you need more things in there, unzipping them gives you a LOT more space.Another note on the second strap is that it does go in an odd angle. It's hard to explain, but makes fitting it properly very hard on my male, but not my female. My male is the one who most often wears it, as he's a service dog and is with me virtually 24/7 to do medical alerts/responses.Over all I wouldn't get this again, or recommend it to most people. I'm sure others may find it great, especially if their dog has longer fur or denser fur where it wont irritate their skin as much. I think for over 30 dollars, you should get a better quality backpack. For 30 dollars you should get a welded d-ring that won't be a safety hazard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works Nicely
Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2017
Have owned it for several months now and taken it out a couple times for hikes. My dog is a 75lbs shepherd mix who is pretty stout at the chest, with some adjustment to harness it fits perfectly and she has no problems with it. She actually likes it quite a bit and seems to feel important while wearing it haha. Not to mention she gets lots of compliments while wearing it (it is pretty cute with the bright color). Now that being said it does have some flaws. It does list heavily to one side unless you take care to perfectly balance the weight in both sides. Try matching water bottles on both side and try to keep their levels pretty close while using it. Also I wouldn't try to lift or hold a heavy dog by the handle. Or attach your leash to the harness itself, it is just not strong enough to be trusted like that. While climbing I grabbed the handle to help lift her while she climbed a large rock and immediately heard a tearing sound. I don't see any damage and I'll still use the pack. It works great to help her burn energy and keep my hands water bottle free. So for me I think it was worth the price even with its limits.

Update: I've now owned this backpack for several years and still use it for every hike! I now own two more dogs and the backpack fits all of them with adjustments. The smallest dog is probably about 55-60lbs. She's a fairly small female pitbull mix with a broad chest. It also fits well on my athletic male Labrador who weighs about 70lbs, but has a much taller more slender frame than my two girls. It's held up well through the years and all 3 dogs have no problem with it. It actually seems to help my timid rescue dog's confidence when she wears it. Definitely worth the money!

5.0 out of 5 stars Durable and functional
Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2022
I ordered a Medium for BOTH of my dogs and due to the adjustable straps, it fits them both perfectly! One of my girls is 48lbs (pit/boxer mix) and the other is 73lbs (pit/white swiss shepard/lab mix) for a reference point. No rubbing or chaffing on their belly or armpits, they stay in place even if they shake, when they squat for potty, it doesn't effect them or move.
I have a 16.7oz plastic water bottle on each side pouch but on days I want to tire them out more, I was able to add 2 water bottles per side.
There is another zipper to expand the pouch so I'm sure I could fit even more. One of my dogs trots on walks and I've noticed a few times that the zipper started to open a bit, maybe from the water bottle jiggling on it but not enough to take away a star from my review.
It's very durable and a great value for price. I've walked them in rain, snow and sun and have not had any issues with the material.
Important to note ... THIS IS NOT TO BE USED AS A HARNESS AND YOU SHOULD NOT HOOK YOUR LEASH TO THE CLASP OR HANDLE

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall great, but the D ring broke
Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2019
I bought this backpack for a 6+ mile hiking trip and overall it held up amazingly. I have a 65 lb pit bull mix and I got the large and it fit him very well when it was adjusted to almost as tight as it could go. It was able to hold a normal plastic water bottle on each side, his poop bags, and a bag of food, with a little room to spare. There are also small pockets on the outside of the backpack which was nice, I kept my chapstick in one. One major issue was that the D ring that came on the pack broke within a couple of hours. Thank goodness we had his regular harness on underneath (and it hooks in the front) so it wasn’t too much of an issue, but if you have a strong dog that pulls I would not recommend using the D ring on this pack, it opened right up. If you have a harness that hooks on the back of your dog this pack will not work with it. Other than that I love this backpack, it stayed in place and didn’t lean to one side at all except for when his leash pushed it that way since it latches in the front, but still nothing major. The material is strong and didn’t leave any marks on my dog even though he was pulling a lot before the D ring broke. Overall would recommend this product if you have a harness that would work with it or a dog that doesn’t pull.

Our dog now carries water and food for her and our other dog on hikes and she loves her backpack. We've had problems in the past with harnesses pinching and rubbing her but this one is really adjustable and she's had no issues. She can run and leap freely while wearing this, even when carrying plenty of weight. Also she looks adorable in it. And it's very affordable compared to other options on the market! Recommend.
